By 871, Viking victories over Mercia, East Anglia, and Northumbria granted them control over a significant portion of northern and eastern England. Their influence on the region continued for many years, even leaving their mark on the English language through adopted Viking words. Interestingly, some English people today even have Viking ancestry, highlighting the lasting impact of the Vikings in England.
